Learning to be comfortable with growing old is difficult in a society which idolizes youth. Changing negative attitudes towards aging requires education for the young, middle aged and seniors.
The Council on Aging offers the following services to help educate the public on aging:
Elementary and Secondary School Education:
Manuals have to be developed for use by teachers at all levels, including lesson plans and resources materials lists. Staff and senior volunteers are available to speak to classes on a variety of
areas related to the experience of aging. The lesson plans, activities and work sheets help students achieve a healthy understanding of the aging process and the important role of the older person in the community.
Speakers:
Are available to the General Public for presentations, workshops and discussions on various topics of aging.
The goal of these informative sessions is to help people develop a positive view of their own aging process, expose false and negative stereotypes regarding aging and promote and encourage positive attitudes.
Pre- Retirement Training:
Materials have been developed. A 12 hour course is available to the general public and to groups of individuals, on request. The Council on Aging, Windsor - Essex County, helps people prepare for retirement with an informative, pro- active Pre- Retirement Planning Program. Workshops are offered and manuals provided with useful information regarding aging. Participants examine many retirement issues such as:
Developing a positive attitude toward aging
Lean how to adjust to retirement living
Take stock of personal resources, such as health, finances, considerations, government benefits and pensions
Learning the importance of physical and mental mental health
Legal issues and recreation and leisure
Gaining a better understanding of the next phase in their lives in order to make the most of the years to come
